Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare has called for stronger collective action and accountability in the fight against gender-based violence.
Minister responsible, Mary Navicha made the call on Monday during the opening of the Malawi GBV Learning, Innovation and Action Symposium 2026 in Lilongwe.
Navicha said Malawi has laws and institutions to address GBV, but implementation and accountability must improve if the country is to win the fight.
Meanwhile, Chairperson for Malawi Irish Consortium on Gender-Based Violence Susie Kiely said the 24,467 GBV cases reported in 2025, including more than 22,000 involving women, highlight the scale of the challenge, with many cases still going unreported.
Kiely has called on organisations to honestly assess their own work by asking whether they are reaching those in need, learning from communities and acknowledging approaches that are working.
