Several African countries are offering some of the world’s cheapest fuel prices, driven by government subsidies, price controls, and access to crude oil reserves. Libya leads the pack with petrol prices at $0.024 per litre, followed by Angola ($0.327) and Algeria ($0.366), according to Global Petrol Prices data updated on January 26, 2026.
These countries’ fuel prices are significantly lower than the global average, providing relief to motorists and industries. Libya’s vast oil reserves and subsidies contribute to its exceptionally low prices, while Angola and Algeria’s strong oil production and government interventions help maintain affordable fuel costs.
In contrast, Malawi is struggling with high fuel prices, currently ranking among the highest in Africa at approximately $1.74 per litre. The disparity highlights the varying economic conditions and policies across the continent.
