Zolozolo, Mzuzu Urban Hospital, and Mzuzu University Clinic have been pinpointed as the main HIV hotspots in Mzimba North, according to officials from the Mzimba North District Health Office.
The revelation came during a meeting with Community Health Rights Advocacy, where District Medical Officer Shadreck Mzimba Ngwira highlighted the district’s high HIV prevalence rate, attributing it to Mzimba’s rapid growth and bustling activities. “Mzimba North is experiencing a surge in population, leading to increased HIV transmission,” Ngwira said. “We need to act now to curb the spread of the disease.”
Programs Manager for Community Health Rights Advocacy, Alex Dalitso Kaomba, stressed the need for community sensitization on Cabla’s rollout. The 18-month project, valued at approximately K66 million, aims to identify gaps in HIV fight in Blantyre, Mangochi, Lilongwe, and Mzimba North. “This project will help us understand the challenges facing our communities and develop effective strategies to combat HIV,” Kaomba said.
The initiative seeks to enhance HIV response in these districts, with a focus on community engagement and awareness. Authorities urge residents to take proactive steps in HIV prevention and treatment, including regular testing, condom use, and adherence to antiretroviral therapy.
The project will also support community-based initiatives, such as peer education and support groups, to promote HIV awareness and reduce stigma. “We call on all stakeholders to join forces in the fight against HIV,” said Ngwira. “Together, we can make a difference and create a healthier community.”
